The AI API Landscape in 2025
Every SaaS product is adding AI features, but choosing the right API is harder than it looks. Price, latency, quality, and rate limits all vary wildly between providers.
I've integrated AI into over 10 production SaaS products. Here's what I've learned about picking the right provider and avoiding the most expensive mistakes.
OpenAI (GPT-4o, GPT-4o-mini)
Best for: General-purpose text generation, chat interfaces, code generation
Pricing: GPT-4o runs about $5/1M input tokens and $15/1M output tokens. GPT-4o-mini is dramatically cheaper at $0.15/$0.60.
Pros: Best ecosystem, most tutorials, strongest general reasoning, function calling is excellent
Cons: Rate limits can be restrictive on lower tiers, costs add up fast at scale with GPT-4o
When to use: If you're building a chatbot, content generator, or any text-heavy feature, OpenAI is the safe default. Start with GPT-4o-mini for development and switch to GPT-4o only for tasks that need it.
Anthropic (Claude 3.5 Sonnet, Claude 3 Haiku)
Best for: Long document analysis, nuanced writing, tasks requiring careful instruction following
Pricing: Claude 3.5 Sonnet is $3/$15 per million tokens. Haiku is $0.25/$1.25.
Pros: Larger context window (200K tokens), better at following complex instructions, less likely to hallucinate on factual queries
Cons: Smaller ecosystem, fewer tutorials, can be overly cautious/verbose
When to use: If your feature involves analyzing long documents, legal text, or requires high accuracy in instruction following. Claude excels at tasks where you need the AI to be careful rather than creative.
Prompt Engineering That Actually Works
Forget the "prompt engineering" hype. Here are the three techniques that actually matter in production:
1. System prompts with examples. Don't just tell the AI what to do — show it. Include 2-3 examples of ideal input/output pairs in your system prompt. This alone improves quality by 30-50%.
2. Structured output. Always request JSON output with a defined schema. Use OpenAI's function calling or Claude's tool use. Parsing free-text responses in production is a nightmare.
3. Chain of thought for complex tasks. For multi-step reasoning, ask the model to think step-by-step. But hide the reasoning from the user — only show the final answer.
Cost Management and Rate Limiting
AI API costs can spiral fast. Here's how to keep them under control:
Cache aggressively. If the same input produces the same output, cache it. We use Redis with a 24-hour TTL for most AI responses. This alone cut one client's costs by 60%.
Use the cheapest model that works. Run GPT-4o-mini or Claude Haiku for simple tasks. Only escalate to the expensive models when quality demands it. Implement a model routing layer that picks the right model based on task complexity.
Set hard spending limits. Every AI provider lets you set monthly spending caps. Set them. Also implement per-user rate limits in your app — 50 requests/day for free tier, unlimited for paid.
Batch requests. If you're processing multiple items, batch them into a single API call where possible. This reduces overhead and often gets better results.
Monitor everything. Log every API call with its cost, latency, and model. Build a simple dashboard. You need to know which features are expensive before they blow up your bill.

Fallback Handling
AI APIs go down. Models get deprecated. Rate limits get hit. Your app needs to handle all of this gracefully.
1. Multi-provider fallback. If OpenAI is down, fall back to Claude. If both are down, serve a cached response or show a friendly error. Never let an API outage crash your user experience.
2. Timeout handling. Set aggressive timeouts (10-15 seconds for most requests). If the AI takes longer, show a partial result or let the user retry.
3. Graceful degradation. The AI feature should be an enhancement, not a requirement. If AI is unavailable, the core product should still work.
Build these patterns from day one. Retrofitting fault tolerance is much harder than building it in.
