Your Landing Page Has 5 Seconds
That's how long visitors give you before deciding to stay or leave. Five seconds.
In that time, they need to understand three things: 1. What does this product do? 2. How does it help me? 3. What should I do next?
If your above-the-fold section doesn't answer all three, you're losing 60-80% of visitors before they ever scroll.
Here's how to build a landing page that converts, based on patterns from over 50 SaaS landing pages we've built and optimized.
Above the Fold: The Make-or-Break Section
Headline: One sentence that describes what your product does and who it's for. Not clever. Clear. "Send invoices in 30 seconds" beats "The future of financial workflows."
Subheadline: One sentence explaining the key benefit. "Get paid 2x faster with automatic payment reminders."
CTA button: One primary action. "Start Free Trial" or "Get Started Free." Not "Learn More" — that's a cop-out. Use a contrasting color that stands out from the rest of the page.
Social proof: One line of proof above the fold. "Trusted by 2,000+ freelancers" or "4.8/5 on G2" or logos of recognizable customers.
Visual: A screenshot or demo of your product. Not a stock photo of people high-fiving. Show the actual product.
Social Proof Placement
Social proof should appear in three places on your landing page:
1. Above the fold: A brief trust signal (user count, rating, or logos)
2. After your feature section: Full testimonials with names, photos, and companies. Include the specific result they achieved, not generic praise. "Reduced our invoice time from 2 hours to 10 minutes" beats "Great product, love it!"
3. Before the final CTA: A testimonial that addresses the most common objection. If people worry about pricing, show a testimonial about ROI. If they worry about setup complexity, show one about easy onboarding.
Use real photos. Use real names. Use real companies. Fake testimonials are obvious and destroy trust.
CTA Copy That Converts
Your CTA button text matters more than you think.
Instead of "Sign Up" try: "Start Free Trial" (sets expectation of free), "Get Started in 60 Seconds" (removes time objection), or "See It in Action" (curiosity-driven).
Below the button, add a benefit line: "No credit card required" or "Free for teams up to 5" or "Cancel anytime."
Repeat your CTA 3-4 times on the page. After the hero, after features, after testimonials, and in the footer. Users scroll at different speeds — put the CTA where they are when they're ready.
Make one CTA primary. Don't offer "Start Free Trial" AND "Book a Demo" AND "Watch Video" all competing for attention. Pick one primary action and make everything else secondary.
Mobile Optimization and Testing
50-70% of your traffic is mobile. If your landing page doesn't work on a phone, you're throwing away half your visitors.
Mobile checklist: - Hero text is readable without zooming (minimum 16px body text) - CTA button is thumb-friendly (minimum 48px height) - No horizontal scrolling - Images are responsive and properly sized - Form fields are easy to tap - Page loads in under 3 seconds on 4G
A/B testing without tools: You don't need Optimizely or VWO to test. Deploy two versions of your landing page on different URLs. Split traffic with a simple redirect. Compare conversion rates after 500 visits per variant. This takes 30 minutes to set up and costs nothing.
Start with testing your headline. It has the highest impact on conversion. Then test your CTA copy. Then your social proof. Each test takes 1-2 weeks with decent traffic.
