10 SEO Mistakes SaaS Founders Make (and How to Fix Them)

Why Technical SEO Is Non-Negotiable for SaaS

You can write the best content in the world, but if Google can't crawl and index your pages properly, nobody will ever see it. Technical SEO is the foundation everything else sits on.

For SaaS companies — especially those built with React or other JavaScript frameworks — technical SEO has unique challenges. Client-side rendering, dynamic routes, and single-page architecture can all trip up search engines if you're not careful.

Here are the 10 most common mistakes I see SaaS founders make, and exactly how to fix each one.

1. Not Making Your SPA Crawlable

Google's crawler can render JavaScript, but it's not perfect. If your React app relies entirely on client-side rendering, some pages may not get indexed at all.

Fix: Use server-side rendering (Next.js) or pre-rendering (prerender.io, Netlify prerendering) for your marketing pages. Your app itself can stay as an SPA — but your landing pages, blog, and docs need to be crawlable.

Alternatively, keep your marketing site as static HTML and only use React for the authenticated app. This is what we do at Hykvra for most clients.

2. Ignoring Core Web Vitals

Core Web Vitals (LCP, FID, CLS) are ranking factors. A slow, janky page will rank lower than a fast, stable one.

Fix: - LCP (Largest Contentful Paint): Optimize your hero image. Use WebP format, proper sizing, and preload it. Target under 2.5 seconds. - FID/INP (Interaction to Next Paint): Minimize JavaScript bundle size. Code-split aggressively. Defer non-critical scripts. - CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift): Set explicit dimensions on images and embeds. Don't inject content above the fold after load.

Use Google's PageSpeed Insights and Lighthouse to audit. Fix the red items first.

3. Missing or Duplicate Meta Tags

Every page needs a unique title tag (under 60 characters) and meta description (under 160 characters). Duplicate titles across pages confuse Google about which page to rank.

Fix: Use a helmet library (react-helmet-async) to set per-page meta tags dynamically. Include your primary keyword in the title. Write descriptions that make people want to click.

For React SPAs, make sure your meta tags are set before the page renders — or use pre-rendering to bake them into the HTML.

4. No Schema Markup

Schema markup (structured data) helps Google understand what your page is about. For SaaS, the most useful types are Organization, Product, FAQ, Article, and BreadcrumbList.

Fix: Add JSON-LD structured data to your pages. At minimum: - Organization schema on your homepage - Article schema on blog posts - FAQ schema on pages with FAQ sections - Product schema on your pricing page

Use Google's Rich Results Test to validate your markup.

5. Broken Canonical Tags and Sitemap Issues

Canonical tags tell Google which version of a page is the "real" one. If they're wrong, you'll split your ranking power across duplicate pages.

Fix: Every page should have a self-referencing canonical tag. If you have pagination or filter parameters that create duplicate URLs, canonical them back to the main page.

For your sitemap: - Include all pages you want indexed - Exclude admin pages, auth pages, and parameter variations - Submit it in Google Search Console - Keep it under 50,000 URLs - Update it when you add new pages

For React SPAs, generate your sitemap statically and place it in the public folder.

6. Ignoring Internal Linking

Most SaaS sites have siloed content — blog posts that link to nothing, service pages with no inbound links. Internal links distribute ranking power and help Google understand your site structure.

Fix: Every new blog post should link to 2-3 existing pages. Every service page should be linked from at least 5 blog posts. Create a simple internal linking map.

7. Not Optimizing for Search Intent

A page about "invoicing software" targeting the keyword "what is an invoice" will never convert. The keyword has informational intent — the user wants a definition, not a product.

Fix: Before writing any content, ask: is this keyword informational, navigational, or transactional? Match your content format to the intent. Transactional keywords get landing pages. Informational keywords get blog posts.

8. Thin Content and Keyword Stuffing

A 300-word page targeting a competitive keyword will never rank. Neither will a page that repeats "invoicing software" 40 times. Google's algorithms have been trained on billions of pages — they know the difference.

Fix: Target minimum 1,200 words for informational content. Use your keyword naturally (aim for 1-2% density). Write for humans first. If it sounds keyword-stuffed when you read it aloud, it is.

9. Ignoring Page Speed for SaaS Apps

Most SaaS teams obsess over the marketing site but neglect the app itself. But if your onboarding flow loads slowly, users churn before they see value — and slow pages rank lower.

Fix: Run Lighthouse on your app pages, not just your marketing site. Optimize the authenticated experience too. Target LCP under 2.5s on 4G mobile for every user-facing page.

10. Not Building Topical Authority

Google rewards sites that cover a topic deeply over those that have one-off posts. One post about "SaaS SEO" won't rank — but 15 interconnected posts covering every aspect of SaaS SEO will.

Fix: Build topic clusters. Pick 3-5 core topics. Write a pillar page for each. Build 5-10 supporting posts per pillar. Link them all together. This is how newer sites outrank older ones.

Putting It All Together

Technical SEO isn't glamorous, but it's the difference between page 1 and page 10. Here's your priority order:

1. Make sure Google can crawl and render your pages 2. Fix Core Web Vitals (especially LCP) 3. Set unique meta tags on every page 4. Add canonical tags and submit your sitemap 5. Add schema markup for rich results 6. Build a strong internal linking structure 7. Match content to search intent 8. Write comprehensive, natural content 9. Optimize page speed across your entire product 10. Build topical authority with content clusters

Do these ten things and you're ahead of 95% of SaaS companies. The remaining 5% is consistency and patience — SEO compounds over time.
