SEO Is the Best Marketing Channel for SaaS
Paid ads stop working the moment you stop paying. Social media posts disappear in 24 hours. But a well-ranked blog post or landing page brings traffic for years.
SEO is a compounding investment. Every piece of content you create builds on the last. After 6-12 months of consistent effort, organic traffic becomes your largest and cheapest acquisition channel.
This guide covers everything you need to know to start ranking your SaaS product on Google — no prior SEO knowledge required.
Keyword Research Without Paid Tools
You don't need Ahrefs or SEMrush to start. Here are free methods that work:
1. Google Autocomplete. Type your product category into Google and see what it suggests. "invoicing software for..." reveals real search queries.
2. Google's "People Also Ask." These are questions your potential users are asking. Each one is a content opportunity.
3. Reddit and forums. Search your niche on Reddit. The language people use in complaints and questions is the language you should target.
4. Google Search Console. If you have any traffic, GSC shows exactly which queries bring people to your site. Look for queries where you rank 5-20 — these are your quick wins.
5. Competitor analysis. Google your competitors. What pages rank? What topics do they cover? You don't need paid tools — just look at their blog and landing pages manually.
On-Page SEO Basics
Every page on your site should be optimized for one primary keyword. Here's the checklist:
Title tag: Include your keyword near the beginning. Keep it under 60 characters. Make it compelling enough to click.
H1 tag: One per page. Should closely match or include your primary keyword.
Meta description: 150-160 characters. Include your keyword. Write it as a hook — why should someone click?
URL structure: Short, descriptive, includes the keyword. /blog/saas-seo-guide, not /blog/post-12345.
Content: Minimum 1,000 words for blog posts. Answer the search intent thoroughly. Use H2 and H3 subheadings to break up content.
Internal links: Link from every new post to 2-3 existing relevant pages. This helps Google discover and rank your content.
Getting Your First Backlinks
Backlinks (links from other websites to yours) are the strongest ranking factor after content quality.
Easy backlinks: - Submit your product to startup directories (Product Hunt, Indie Hackers, BetaList, AlternativeTo) - Write guest posts for relevant blogs - Get listed in "best tools" roundup articles - Reply to HARO (Help a Reporter Out) queries
Medium-effort backlinks: - Create a free tool or resource that people naturally link to - Publish original data or research - Build relationships with bloggers in your niche
Hard but high-value: - Get press coverage - Speak at conferences or on podcasts - Create the definitive guide on a topic in your niche
Don't buy backlinks. Google penalizes this and it can destroy your rankings overnight. Focus on earning links by creating genuinely useful content.
Tracking Your Rankings
What gets measured gets improved. Here's what to track:
Google Search Console (free): Your most important tool. Shows impressions, clicks, average position, and which queries bring traffic. Check it weekly.
Google Analytics / PostHog: Track which pages drive signups. A page ranking #1 that doesn't convert is useless.
Manual checks: For your top 5-10 keywords, search Google in incognito mode monthly. Note your position and which competitors appear above you.
Key metrics: - Organic traffic growth (month over month) - Keyword positions for your target terms - Conversion rate from organic traffic - Number of indexed pages
SEO takes time. Don't expect results in the first month. Most SaaS companies see meaningful traffic growth between month 3 and month 6. Stay consistent and the compounding effect will reward you.
